The Andrews government is facing criticism over its decision to launch a Royal Commission into Melbourne’s Crown Casino – with one Opposition member arguing the government was shamed into holding the inquiry. The Victorian government on Monday called for a Royal Commission after a New South Wales inquiry into Crown’s flagship Sydney casino found evidence of money laundering and links to organised crime. Opposition gaming spokeswoman Steph Ryan said the state government was shamed into the decision which Premier Daniel Andrews – who was not present when the announcement was made – did not want. Victoria Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien also targeted the government on Twitter for the move, calling for a different Royal Commission. “And while Labor is calling Royal Commissions, Victoria deserves a RC into this state’s COVID-19 response,” Mr O’Brien wrote. “We deserve answers. We deserve the truth.” The Melbourne casino will continue to operate throughout the inquiry, however, Victoria Gaming Minister Melissa Horne insisted it would “operate within the context of a Royal Commission examining its suitability”. "There are thousands of people working in Crown, we need to make sure that we’re protecting jobs but also too were doing it in a way where the casino is operating in a suitable manner," she said. Following the announcement on Monday, Harold Mitchell resigned from Crown's board, becoming the fourth director to step down. The Royal Commission was expected to hand down its findings on August 1.
