The only way to achieve a more present and fatter sound is to raise the pickup pole pieces closer to the strings by unscrewing them (about 2,5 / 3 mm over the pickup top surface). This will allow the string to transmit more voltage to the pickups and get that "gritty" tone John's has, on the Let it be record and on the rooftop concert.I' have found it curious that the Beatles had such a knowledge of the electric pickup functions back in 1968 (maybe even before? Does anyone have any hi resolutions image of the '65 / '68 period?).
